Some where around September of 1995, Pierre Omidvar decided to list a single broken laser pointer on a site originally called the Auction web. At the time Omidvar was a software developer for a major computer company, and only intended the broken laser pointer to be a test and not a serious offer to auction off. Not knowing that he had built the first eBay store ever, to his surprise the laser pointer was sold for $14.83. Pierre knew that he was on to something big but to make sure he contacted the winning bidder of the broken laser pointer to make that he understood that it was broken. Realizing that there are competent people all over the world who collect all sorts of items, whether in mint condition or broken, Pierre wanted to run with his idea. Thus bringing forth what's known today as eBay.
