For mid-sized TV sets, it will probably not make too much of a difference whether you get a plasma tv or an LCD set. However, you might see a significant difference in quality once the size of the sets in question has reached over 30 inches. A  plasma tv  generally speaking will deliver better quality picture superior contrast and brightness and wider viewing angles than and LCD TV set. The LCD will also lose its price advantage when larger TV sets are in question as a plasma tv will in most cases be a lot cheaper than an LCD at larger sizes.
